Michelle SaintOnge Delights with New Original Watercolours...

Just in time for the Holidays!...

We're proud present these amazing miniature paintings by gallery artist Michelle SaintOnge.  These delightful little gems make great gifts, and are perfect for both art collectors and animal lovers alike!  

These original watercolours on paper have been mounted to wood cradled panels, making them easy to hang, or display on a shelf!  Each unique painting is sold separately, but can also be combined as groupings to add a decorative element to a space for your home or office.

Each painting depicts a different animal with its own witty title.  To quote The Bard "What's in a name?" certainly plays to the "Woodchucks" sensibilities.  Michelle's "If A Woodchuck Could Chuck Wood, He Would Be A Beaver" is an unfortunate case of nomenclature gone awry.  If the Woodchuck could chuck wood, would he?

"Woooooo, is the sound you will hear" is a reference to the local seal population on Sable Island.  Michelle recently took a trip out as part of an Eco-tour, and noticed the way the Seals responded to the waves crashing over them...Wooooooooooo! (SPOILERS; It's the sound you'll here).

"Sully McCrankypants" was inspired by the recent unprovoked attack by the Geese of Sullivan's Pond on an unsuspecting Dartmouth resident.  It is unclear whether Sully acted alone, or whether the attack was pre-meditated...the usual suspects have since been rounded up and relocated to their winter home...

Attention Artists! PRE-SHRUNK TIME IS HERE!

Have you picked up your PRE-SHRUNK surfaces yet from DESERRES or NSCAD Art Supply? 

They have lots of surfaces to choose from including wide profile canvas and board. Go and see them soon for the best selection and start creating. It's hard to believe it's that time of year again to remind all of you artists to participate in our Pre-Shrunk show opening on Friday, January 24th, 2020.

This will be our 16th year for this highly anticipated and exciting event that brings people together, including so many different styles of art and provides a fun accessible way for people of all ages to appreciate and purchase original art. Not to mention, it's just the best show to attend to boost you spirits! We just received an image from artist Sharon Cave of an adorable fox that will be included in the show.

Pre-Shrunk is a wonderful show to showcase your work and reach a huge audience. Many of our gallery artists actually began working with us because of group shows including this one.

The challenge with this show is choosing your subject carefully, as painting on a small 4" x 5" surface may not be as easy as it sounds. Each work is priced at $175 at the show as well, to encourage people to just enjoy the art for what it is, and not necessarily who it's by.

The show opens late January, but because this is a juried show we need to receive your submissions early January, so don't delay.

Squares of Stickiness Round Up

This past Saturday we held a show called "Squares of Stickiness" which featured 3" x 3" artworks on sticky notes. It was amazing to see the variety of mediums used and different approaches to this unusual request.The objective of the show was to have some fun but also to remind people that art is affordable and comes in all shapes and sizes.

Although many of the works sold on Saturday, we wanted to highlight a few of the works that are still available- various artists.  Each of these are just $15 each and would make a lovely gift either framed up or mounted, or simply as a pick-me-up for a friend  to hang in their office or to pop inside a card you may sending this holiday season. All are original works- ink, collage, paintings...

Beyond Needle and Thread, Mindy Harris' "Wonder Women"

Today we feature the Hand Embroidered "Thread Paintings" of Mindy Harris.  Mindy's "Wonder Women" exhibition is currently on display at Argyle Fine Art until November 6th.

We've selected some of our favorite pieces from the show, and wanted to feature the stories of the real-life "Wonder Women" depicted in these works...

"My current work attempts to displace the inherent voyeurism historically linked to the female form in art, and create a space where women are not just subjects, but rather the heroines of their own remarkable stories. The laborious nature of the work can't help but reference the historical constraints of femininity, and with each careful, meditative stitch, I humbly borrow from a long history of women using fiber work to speak in societies where they have struggled to be heard.”

"Josephine Baker was an American-born entertainer, French Resistance agent, and civil rights activist. Her career was centered primarily in Europe. Baker was the first African-American to star in a major motion picture, the 1927 silent film "Siren of the Tropics".

During her early career Baker was renowned as a dancer. Her performance in the revue Un vent de folie in 1927 caused a sensation in Paris. Her costume, consisting of only a girdle of artificial bananas, became an iconic image and a symbol of the Jazz Age and the 1920s. 

She was known for aiding the French Resistance movement during World War II.  After the war, she was awarded the Croix de Guerre, and was named a Chevalier of the Legion
D 'Honneur by General Charles de Gaulle.

Baker refused to perform for segregated audiences in the United States and is noted for her contributions to the Civil Rights Movement." (Online Source, Wikipedia).

From here we move on to noted scientist and innovator Margaret Hamilton...

"Margaret Hamilton is an American Computer Scientist, Systems Engineer and Business Owner. She was director of the Software Engineering Division of the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory, which developed on-board flight software for NASA's Apollo Space Program. She later founded two software companies—Higher Order Software in 1976 and Hamilton Technologies in 1986.

Hamilton has published more than 130 papers, proceedings and reports about sixty projects and six major programs. She is one of the people credited with coining the term "Software Engineering".

On November 22, 2016, Hamilton received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama for her work leading to the development of on-board flight software for NASA's Apollo Moon missions." (online source, Wikipedia)

Last, but not least, we examine the life and works of Malala Yousafzai...

"Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Prize laureate. She is known for human rights advocacy, especially the education of women and children in Pakistan.  On 9 October 2012, while on a bus in the Swat District of Pakistan, Yousafzai and two other girls were shot by a Taliban gunman in an assassination attempt in retaliation for her activism. The attempt on her life sparked an international outpouring of support for Yousafzai.  Her advocacy has grown into an international movement.  Based in Birmingham, she founded the Non-Profit Organization, the Malala Fund. The 2013, 2014 and 2015 issues of Time Magazine featured her as one of the most influential people globally. 

In 2017, she was awarded honorary Canadian citizenship and became the youngest person to address the House of Commons of Canada." (online source, Wikipedia)

Mindy Harris is a multidisciplinary artist currently living and working in Lewis Lake, Nova Scotia.  Mindy received her BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) in Halifax, NS.

She has publicly presented work in a variety of mediums, including sculpture, painting and
handcrafted filmmaking. Her work can be found in private collections across North America.
