Out and About: Jan Davison's Art in the Places that Inspired it

If you're out and about...or as we say in Nova Scotia..."out and aboot" at local Nova Scotian businesses, make sure to keep your eyes peeled for original art by Jan Davison.

Jan is a local artist that has worked with our gallery since it began, 19 years ago! She has always been interested in capturing places and people all around our region and for the last number of years, has been painting her favourite Halifax Haunts, and a few others along the Lighthouse Trail.

We thought it would be fun to showcase her art outside of the standard gallery setting, and place the paintings in the actual locations that inspired them. It's almost like an art scavenger hunt! How many will you discover?

We are adding new locations all the time, but so far we have art hanging at The Old Apothecary, Rousseau Chocolatier, and The Brown Hound and Boxing Rock Brewery in Shelburne (the artists' favourite brew of all!)

Take a look below and take a moment to support local businesses and artists any time you can.

Jan Davison's painting of The Old Apothecary! Enjoy it with your coffee now, or take it home!

Eat some chocolate and look at art by Jan at Rousseau

Look up....over there! It's Jan Davison art at The Brown Hound! Horray!  (Ps- we hear their burgers are the best!)

...And if you need great beer and you happen to be in Shelburne, check out BOXING ROCK! They are building a new brewery with a tasting room too- can't wait!
Happy exploring ! Let us know what you think! Of course, all of these works are available to purchase. You can see better images of these works HERE. If you'd like to see some other works by Jan Davison, you can get in touch and we'd be happy to send you some more images.Always happy to help you own original art by local artists. :-)

Pre-Shrunk Sale Round-Up!

We're all familiar with the Pre-Shrunk exhibition held at Argyle Fine Art every January.

Some of our gallery artists were first introduced to us through this annual group show.  Many of whom went on to have solo exhibitions at Argyle in later years!

Pre-Shrunk offers a wide variety of works from artists of all walks of life.  Every year the gallery is bombarded with hundreds of small works.  Artists submissions are carefully curated in preparation of this highly anticipated event.

This year we had almost 500 small works hanging on the gallery walls!

You may be asking yourselves, what happens to all the unsold works after the show ends?

While some pieces are returned to artists, others remain in our inventory, and may be featured as independent offerings or in small groupings throughout the year.

From year to year the steady influx of small works start to accumulate, and the older pieces end up in storage.  As time (and wall space) permits, we often find ourselves looking for opportunities to display these lost (but not forgotten) gems.

The Pre-Shrunk Sale is a great way to pick up some inexpensive works for your home or office.  It's also a fun way to add a few new pieces to an existing collection.  Small works are easy to find a place for.  Many of which can stand up on a shelf, or be hung on a wall, on its own or in small grouping.  Small works can add an accent to your existing decor.

There's lots to choose from, drop in today!

The Pre-Shrunk sale has been extended!!!, works range from $65 to $95.  Contact the gallery for details!

Back to 1985: Stranger Wonderful Times

Argyle Fine Art celebrates all things "1985" to commemorate the release of Stranger Things Season 3- a pop culture favourite here at the gallery.  Our current window display pays tribute to the franchise with an inspired message from the Upside Down! !Be sure to drop by the gallery to check it out!

You'll also find a selection of Damien Webb miniature paper sculptures including a pretzel stand, bumper cars and a ticket booth- as the latest season is quite playful and partially at a fair and inside a mall!

For your supernatural fix, we may not have a demagorgon, but we do have Greebs byTroy Benoit of all shapes and sizes!
Happy binge watching and while you're at it, why not binge-buy some local art too!
See you soon!

Gordon MacDonald Speaks about Nothing

It may sound a little like a Seinfeld stand-up routine- where Jerry Seinfeld always talks about "nothing" but Gordon MacDonald's topic of discussion was "doing nothing"  when he was recently a guest of the popular MoMondays Halifax series in May which is now online for all of us to enjoy. He of course, made people laugh but spoke honestly and openly about how he got to where he is right now.   Please take a look and share widely!

(BTW- Gordon's solo show is coming up on July 19th and a workshop on July 28th that you can sign up for today! Find out more by phoning or visiting our blog section called WORKSHOPS!)

We can't speak highly enough about this wonderful series that more people really should attend- it's inspiring, funny, and a breath of fresh air to hear everyday people share their stories in a wide array of topis. We encourage you to follow the MoMondays website where you can link to their social media pages including the most active one,  Halifax Facebook Page for updates on monthly speakers and topics. Maybe you'll even want to participate!
