Oranges for Christmas: George Spencer's latest work

Last year, around this time we blogged about George Spencer's paintings and how much of the subject matter related to holiday traditions.  The latest work of art that he left with us features brilliant oranges that you can almost smell and taste!

Did you ever receive an orange in your stocking on Christmas morning?

One explanation for this tradition is that December is the season of giving, and the orange segments represent the ability to share what you have with others.

George's wonderful painting, which you can now see in our window, was also the subject of December's CREATIVE EDITIONS art subscription project at Argyle Fine Art.  Find out how to be part of our Art Subscription Service in 2015 by calling us or watching this video from a few months back explaining how it works HERE.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!  The countdown is on now, to relaxation and thankfullness. GIVE to those who need it most- love, food, hugs...oranges. :-)   Argyle Fine Art will be delivering lots of food and toys to people that need a little extra over the holidays...we challenge you to do the same.

What a Wonderful World of Art! LOCAL ARTISTS are the BESTEST!

Today we were so excited to  highlight works by as many of our local artists as we possibly could get on our walls for our holiday OPEN HOUSE. Lots of people dropped by and artists too. THANK YOU!

But don't fret if you couldn't make it down to the gallery, as we'll be open especially for the holiday, on MONDAYS  11am- 3:30pm and we'll also be open LATE this coming Friday, December 19th until 7pm!

We'll also be highlighting wonderful gift ideas over the coming days on our blog right here for those you to enjoy from afar or just those that want to do some browsing from the comfort of home or office.

There were so many laughs and happy people in the gallery today....so so lovely.  People especially loved all the new SHOE artworks by artist Kim Danio, like this little chipmunk below and a few of his other friends...also made from shoes and gloves! Go Art HIKING at Argyle Fine Art tomorrow night and next Tuesday too:MARK BRENNAN!!

ART HIKING....two words that may not always go together, but they seemed like the perfect way to tell you about the 3rd DOWNTOWN ARTWALK evening happening tomorrow night, THURSDAY, Nov. 20th, 6-8pm at Downtown Art Galleries and Shops in Halifax and Dartmouth.  Here is the poster below with partcipants:

And speaking of hiking and art.... Join Mark Brennan at Argyle Fine Art on Tuesday, November 25th for an exciting artist talk about his show, “Seeking The Great Silence: Landscapes of Vancouver Island”. Mark went on a pilgrimage and documented the entire voyage in paint, film and sound. The results, we think you’ll agree, are some of Mark’s strongest works to date.

REGISTER for the ARTIST PRESENTATION on November 25th, 6-7:30pm: Mark Brennan will be presenting a multi-media lecture about his travels to these sacred spaces and about his process as an artist.

**Pre- Register your seat with payment of $10, as limited seats will be available. If you love and value nature and art, or are a student of art, we highly recommend attending this lecture; Mark Brennan is one of the best public presenters we’ve experienced.

New work by Sarah Jones

Hot off the presses, is a collection of tanker paintings sent to us by Sarah Jones. Sarah's use of impasto is rich and expressive. She's fearless in her use of heaps of paint, and pushes it around roughly with a palette knife -the result is both provocative and exciting! These particular little paintings below measure 4" x 4" (and have an extra wide profile) ($125) You'll find others here at the gallery that measure 5" x 10" and 6" x 24". Come see!

"In Flanders Fields...." On Remembrance Day, Remember.

At Argyle Fine Art we value the importance of stopping and remembering those men and women who served bravely for our safety and freedoms in Canada and continue to do so on a daily basis.  Lest us never forget and be thankful.

Artist Christopher Hemsworth created an entire series of prints based on the famous Heritage Minutes series, aired on Canadian televisions all across this great land. He particularly wanted to pay tribute to this Heritage Minute and made sure it was number 11 in the series.

Although we won't be open this week on Tuesday, November 11th, this work will be featured proudly in our window.

A limited amount of them have been printed. If you are interested in owning one, get in touch with us and we'll be sure to send one your way or have one here for you throughout the rest of the week.

NEW WORK BY BRIANA CORR SCOTT

New to the gallery is a fresh collection of still life paintings by artist Brianna Corr Scott. They're a bit of a departure from the architectural pieces that many of you know her by, and notably looser.  They have a freshness about them that's difficult to describe (and photograph, for that matter!) but here's a few shots of them none the less. As we start prepping for Mark Brennan's new exhibition, make a stop into the gallery to see these pieces... They're beautifully composed, with the perfect balance of rich colours and bright whites.

Artist Talk you Don't want to Miss by Mark Brennan!

We've heard artist Mark Brennan speak on a number of occasions, about his passion for art and nature and how the two things are linked for him. Last Summer we worked with Mark and  Kejimjukak National Park on a presentation about Mark's work and because it was so well received, we decided we should offer a similar opportunity for city dwelling art and nature lovers too.

Therefore, we're very excited to invite you all to attend this talk about Mark's new body of work, that will be on display during the night of the talk on Tuesday, November 25th, 6-7:30pm

Not only does Mark speak, paint and write beautifully about his experiences but he also records sounds in nature and makes films too. What doesn't Mark do!  Come and discover Mark Brennan's world of art. Registration is required for the talk, as seating will be limited and there is a small fee, of $10.  Call us to reserve your seat!

Nocturne: It's a Beautiful Thing!

Last Saturday night, October 18th, Halifax hosted the 7th Annual Nocturne: Art at Night ;  which is an evening where galleries and artists take to walls, streets, abandoned spaces and even park benches- all in the name of ART!  What we love about Nocturne at Argyle Fine Art is the energy in the air, which  is really hard to explain and best experienced, but if we had to use two words to describe perhaps electric or magical may suffice. This little city of ours comes to life with safe and fun exhibits for everyone to enjoy for free. We must have seen close to 4000 in our modest gallery alone and really appreciate meeting many of you for the first time.

The importance of events like Nocturne are critical in engaging the public and reminding them that art really is for everyone, and we're open year round and always accessible. We love what we do and get excited when we make an impact on someone's day with art.

We opened two great exhibits the night of Nocturne which were very well received and still continue until November 11th, so drop by again or for the first time to experience these shows.  In our main gallery, we are showcasing the work of Trevor Van den Eijnden in his show called "Familiar Strangers:" which is a combination of three-dimensional sculpture as well as mixed media paintings, that are a direct result of the shadows cast through his constructions. The sculptures are made of ...paper and unbelievable!

Photo submitted by Paula Fredericks. Thanks for dropping by!
Installation shot of one of the paper sculptures.

Then in our Lower Gallery we are featuring the works of six artists that don't normally show their works in galleries, but rather on big and small screens all over the world, working as animators. This was a chance for them to showcase their artistic skills in their show called "Paper Trail" Special thanks to Aaron LaShomb for his help on this show.
"The Town Clock on Citadel Hill" by Paton Francis

During Nocturne, the artists also encouraged others to do that same, with a "Leave a Doodle, Take a Doodle" Post-It note interactive portion of the show. Everyone that wanted could take a drawing or leave one too. Keep in mind, this wall began with two lonely Post-It notes at 6pm. At Midnight, this is how the wall appeared. What a great collaboration!

Make sure to keep ART on your to-do list throughout the year! For example, come out to the 3rd annual DOWNTOWN ARTWALK, happening on November 20th.

Thank you Halifax and to all of you that attended from far and wide, all artists, all volunteers....it was a great night for art.

October has been leaping by us at an astonishing pace, and it's difficult to believe that we're already at the mid month mark. If you're a subscriber, make sure you swing by and fetch your copy of "The Stills." Not sure what Creative Editions is? Ask us for more details, or find out more here

On a separate note, we're just about to dive head first into prepping the gallery for this Saturday's NOCTURNE!!! Wish us luck, and make a point to visit us between 6pm and 12am on that evening. It's going to be magical.

We look forward to seeing many of you soon...as next Saturday is NOCTURNE and we have lots of beautiful surprises in store...such as the work below by artist Trevor Van den Eijnden's in his show opening during Nocturne night, called "Familiar Strangers" in our Upper Gallery.

City Harvest - Saturday, October 4th! (yup, that's TOMORROW!!)

Yesterday on the blog, we gave you a taste of what to expect during this Saturday's City Harvest in Downtown Halifax.. To have given you the full rundown all at once would have been overwhelming, so here's what else you can anticipate to see this Saturday!!

The 8th Movement refers to the eighth historical moment in Aboriginal history, which began in 2008, and represents the Aboriginal idea of  'the future'. Each portrait is the representation of a form of 'power' as demonstrated in different legends. The world power is this case is referring to the conscious alteration of the world  through the actions of every day living things. The 8th Movement is a visual strategy to initiate meaningful dialogue between diverse cultures while focusing on the Mi'kmaq perception of the world "

“I SMELL BURNT TOAST” HALIFAX ARTIST CHOSEN TO INTERPRET ICONIC CANADIAN HERITAGE MINUTES

Halifax, NS – Do you want those baskets back? Love Heritage Minutes? Visit ARGYLE FINE ART this weekend and you will find 11 of Canada’s most iconic historical TV-vignettes (plus 2 newer Minutes) interpreted through the creative mind of Halifax-based artist Christopher Hemsworth as commemorative posters.

First released in 1991, Historica Canada’s HERITAGE MINUTES have since become one of the most recognizable and valuable cultural creations for Canada, both historically and in popular culture.

Hemsworth was commissioned to interpret 13 of the Minutes, after his illustrated interpretation of the Halifax Explosion Minute went viral via social media. The selected artwork includes the top 11 Minutes as voted on by Canadians in a nationwide survey conducted by Historica Canada, plus two newer Minutes.

"It is very rewarding to be a part of the Heritage Minutes. They are more than commercials, they are our history, and it's amazing to see that nostalgia come back through the artwork."
— Christopher Hemsworth, Artist

All 13 posters will be displayed at Argyle Fine Art on October 4th during I LOVE LOCAL Halifax – CITY HARVEST and with the option to purchase copies signed by the artist.

"We cannot properly know and understand our stories, our history and each other unless we can connect with each other. This is the necessary starting point for everything else."

Argyle Fine Art for the GOLD: Still time to VOTE for us online!

Dear Everyone,

We hope you are having a good day and would like to ask you to VOTE for Argyle Fine Art as BEST GALLERY in Halifax, according to The Coast's popular survey.  We have won GOLD in years past, but often the provincial gallery, AGNS, takes all the gold and we're left with SILVER- which we love too...don't get us wrong!  But well, we just really love gold so with your click of a button on our behalf, perhaps it will be possible this year! The VOTING ENDS on September 30th, so the time is NOW!

If you are able to spend a few moments, head on over to this LINK: http://thecoast.secondstreetapp.com/l/BOH2014  and while you're there, you can VOTE for some of your other favourite Halifax locations- restaurants, musicians, barbers and more!

With great thanks and appreciation,

THIS FRIDAY! Opening Reception for MARY GAROUTTE and CAITLIN MCGUIRE!

You're all invited to the opening reception for new works by Mary Garoutte and Caitlin McGuire this Friday, September 19th, 7-9pm!

The show will continue until October 11th and will be online for viewing as well, once the show has opened.

Mary Garoutte has exhibited at Argyle Fine Art twice before, and has a growing number of fans of her work. Mary is particularly pleased with this body of work called "Something Red" as it continues her exploration of Halifax's historic Hydrostone District. The works are larger and painted with even looser paint application that in past years. It's so exciting to watch this talented young painter grow. Her ability to capture the city and her sense of light has had some of our clients comparing her works to that of Mark Grantham- a local established artist working in Halifax.

Caitlin McGuire is still studying at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD University) We are very excited to introduce you to this new artist and her sense of style and colour and pure joy! Caitlin's paintings also explore the city of Halifax, in her show called "Port City." Caitlin is also our featured artist for September's Creative Editions.

Previews are available at request.***
