TODAY: Meet Artist Trevor Van Den Eijnden

It's a real beauty out there today, and the downtown is crawling with the excitement that comes from a long weekend. The kids have been set free after another year of  school (congrats to all you youngsters!) and so young families are out in search of entertainment.

Make sure you turn onto Barrington Street during your hunt, and make your way into the gallery this afternoon for a chat with artist Trevor Van den Eijnden. He'll describe the process which he uses to achieve his luminous, and richly coloured paintings. We also have lots of fun work from Nick Brunt's exhibition "Hotdogs Hotdogs Hotdogs" on show in the lower gallery.. COME SEE!!

Trevor Van den Eijnden will be here with us this afternoon from 2 - 3:30.
See you then!

"Lone Oak at Sunset" by Jenny Johnson

Today's feature is a brilliant sunset by JennyJohnson.
Painted with a commanding shilouetted oak tree on the right, and a beaming red lens flair circling the sun on the left - It makes for a great example of the power of light and dark in a painting, doesn't it? Jennifer's ability to convince the viewer of the intense brightness of her sun is remarkable... I find myself squinting everytime I look!

Well, aren't you just the cutest thing! (Birds by Basil Doucette)

Now that the rains have let up temporarily, the atmosphere around the city is much brighter... See that up there?! That's SUNSHINE!!!

During the thick of yesterday's downpour, our wonderful friend Basil Doucette braved the sidewalk lakes with his suitcase filled with little wood carvings, and made his delivery . Aren't these birds just the cutest things?! I should also mention that he had beavers, squirrels and crows in his suitcase, which are now on display here at the gallery.

Tiny Folk Art Birds by Basil Doucette are $15 each

Come For The Paper Towels, Stay For The Art.

It's pretty drippy out there right now.
Some of you are taking refuge under your upside down umbrellas, while others are clinging onto the brims of your too small hoods.  If you ask me, you're better off taking a few moments of drying time here at the gallery. We've got paper towel (not that it'll do you much good...
you're probably soaked to the bone) and artwork to help occupy
the time until the sideways buckets of rain ease up a little.

Upcoming Exhibitions: Nick Brunt! (Show opens TOMORROW!!!)

Also opening tomorrow is the latest body of work to come
from the tremendously talented Nick Brunt.
The opening reception begins at 7pm and runs until 9pm here at Argyle Fine Art

Have a looky here at the article written by Jenna Conter in this morning's Metro about the show! :

Furniture is scarce in Nick Brunt’s new apartment.
The local artist and I sit on the floor, surrounded by his latest works and his record collection.
I assume future furniture will include a drawing table or isle but Brunt tells me, “I have to work on the floor where everything is within reach.”
Brunt’s laidback approach to his process is a delightful symptom of his “weird entrance” into the art world.
“I was into animation and graffiti art when I was younger and now I work in design,” he said.
“I don’t really have any formal art training.”
As a creative member for the design world, Brunt creates everything from graphics for advertising to art for album covers, the latter of which is dropped into my lap by Brunt, gleaming with the genuine excitement of a child who just a gold star on their homework.
“It’s my first nationally released (artwork). Isn’t that fun?!”
Four years ago Brunt took his art work from the office to the galleries and seemed to fumble into a fan base.
“I had donated art into a charity art event in Halifax and (the owner of Argyle Fine Art) got a hold of it and it grew from there.”
According to Brunt, his latest solo show, Hotdogs! Hotdogs! Hotdogs!, at Argyle Fine Art is “a sarcastic comment about the culture we’re living in now”.
“Everybody hates (hot dogs) now or knows how bad they are for you but we have fond memories of throwing back two or three and playing,” he said. “And after going through this anti-hotdog culture for so long, I just wanted to say shut up and have a (expletive) hot dog!”
The show opens Friday at 7 p.m.

Artist a Day: June 15, George Spencer

Here's the newest oil painting to come from an emerging talent, George Spencer. A beautifully lit dish with fresh berries, perfectly ripe for eating. If you haven't heard,  there's  been an absolute frenzy over his work since we've started displaying it shortly after our annual pre-shrunk exhibition. This piece has equally been causing a stir, since it arrived yesterday afternoon.

*ahem. This piece sold before I could publish this post.

Fresh Berries by George Spencer 8" x 10" $395

Artist a Day: June 15th, Malcolm Callaway

This fiery painting painting by Malcolm Callaway is an absolute jaw dropper. The skillfully captured moment is rendered with remarkable realism, while keeping the distinct markings of a Callaway painting. Do come see this for yourselves, because this level of
artistry needs to be appreciated in person.

"Bustin' the Blaze" Oil on Canvas 30" x 30" Malcolm Callaway $2500

Oh Barry.... How wonderful you are. A sculpture so hilarious and beautiful could not have come from anyone but you. For those who have not been acquainted with his work to date, this circus cat makes a great introduction into the world of Barry Colpitts.

Standing proud on a pedestal marked "The Nova Scotia Circus Cat. The most amazing cat in the world almost."  This kitty is ready to impress the toughest crowd imaginable.

Artist a Day: June 13th. Chris Wallace

It's another beautiful day, which makes this announcement even more pleasant to share. We're delighted to feature the newest collection of work by the talented Chris Wallace, who is the newest addition to the list of artists we represent. Adriana has had her eye on Chris's work for some time now, and just recently we've discovered  that he's able to
dedicate himself to his art practice once again, after a successful career in business.
We can't wait to show you this extraordinary collection of Tempera paintings...

"Nests" Egg Tempera on Panel  10" x 25.5" Chris Wallace

Want to be added to his fan list? This allows us to alert you when new works from the artist come in, before we notify the rest of our clientele. Just let us know via email gallery@argylefa.com or phone 902.425.9456 and we'll add you to the list.

Artist a Day: June 9th, Shelley Mitchell

Well there you have it, it's finally Saturday, and it's pouring cats and kittens.
I try to remind myself on a day like today, the beauty in
a good rain storm and it's enormous puddles.

Have a look at Shelley Mitchell's most recent exhibition  - This show exemplifies the beauty of the often rugged nature around us. No need to wait for idyllic blue skies! Take her piece titled "Look Out!" for instance... takes your breath away doesn't it? The way she's rendered the misty lilac sky and the wind chopping away at the wave top is just incredible.

"Look Out!" Oil on Canvas 48" x 60" Shelley Mitchell

Thankfully our city puddles haven't reached this size just yet, but if they do, I won't be leaving the gallery today. Instead, I'll park myself in front of Shelley's
painting, and enjoy the view from in here.

Artist a Day: Adrienne Godbout, June 6th

Imagine, plugging along through the work day with these pieces hanging by your side.... I have to admit, Adrienne's works are incredibly uplifting to have around, and have been the inspiration behind many great conversations this week. They're on display in
the main gallery, and are making quite an impact on our white walls!! They beckon passerby's into the gallery, all the way from across the street.

Adrienne Godbout's exhibition is still on display here at the gallery,
visit in person, or online at www.argylefineart.com
