SUNDAY STUDIO DAYS - WILLOW GLUFKA STUDIO AND HER NEW BODY OF WORK!

On Saturday May 10th we opened Willow Glufka's new show

"Elevations; An Exploration of Atlantic Appalachains"

Willow Glufka, Franey High, Valley Wide, Acrylic on Canvas, 24"x36"

featuring over 20 NEW works from Willow!

Willow Glufka, Cape Smokey and the Bay Blues, Acrylic on Canvas, 18"x36"

We asked Willow some questions about her studio process and most used materials...

"Often I will use a single paintbrush to paint an entire piece. This means even large blocks of
colour take a long time to finish, however, the repetition and uniformity of brush strokes is an
integral part of my process. My favourite brush type to use is a small flat brush. I find them the
best for crisp edges and pushing paint around."

"I am a very messy painter. I absolutely need to wear paint clothes in the studio as I am
constantly wiping brushes on myself."

Willow Glufka, Golden Hour Valley, Acrylic on Canvas, 12"x12"

What activities outside of your art practice do you like to enjoy?

"Now the weather is warming up I am getting very excited for camping season. Most of my
pieces are inspired by photos and sketches I have collected while hiking. Some of my favourite
local hiking and camping locations include Blomidon Provincial Park, High Head Trail, and the
Nine Miles River Trails. I am constantly looking for new places to explore."

Willow Glufka, Orange at Fault, Acrylic on Canvas, 16"x20"

We're excited to see what other wonderful things come out of Willow's studio!

Sunday Studio Days - Nancy MacDonald & Karen Daigle

WELCOME BACK once again to our Sunday Studio Days Blog!

This week we are taking a peek at the studios of Nancy MacDonald and Karen Daigle!

NANCY MACDONALD
The view of Nancy's studio space

A view looking out the window at Nancy's work station

Nancy says her favourite part of her studio is the the natural light and views.

"The room is at the corner of my house and has two windows that look down the LaHave River on the South Shore. I placed my drawing table in front of one of the windows where I get to sit and watch my backyard birds, my littler muses, who love to hang out in a quince bush right outside the window."

Artist's often receive really interesting advice, we love this advice Nancy has to share!

"One of the biggest things I learned over the years is how to listen to critiques of your work. It’s always great practice to show your work to others and be open to their opinions. You must learn how to accept
someone’s personal experience and identify what can be used as constructive criticism. Everyone is going to see something different in your work and you might not always agree but you may come away with new ideas and it can be a great way to grow as an artist."

Often artists have a favourite go-to entertainment while artmaking, we asked Nancy what she liked to listen to...

"I love listening to podcasts while I work. My current favourite is Your Wrong About. It’s a podcast about history and pop culture. The show hosts are journalists who explore events that the media and the public may have gotten wrong. By researching and fact checking they attempt to give us the real story behind the subjects like the Ammityville Horror, how the Satanic Panic manifested or the rise and fall of the Beanie Babies. They also do deep dives into the stories of people like Karen Carpenter, Tonya Harding or Tammy Faye Baker. They are super interesting and entertaining."

KAREN DAIGLE

A shot of Karen's painting station

We asked Karen where does the inspiration for her beautiful oil paintings come from?

"In the light… and shapes and the way light bounces off and creates connections between objects. Light influences all values, colors and temperatures and how all these things can come together and can communicate a feeling. Its allows expression in a language nobody knows but so many understand."

Karen's still life set up with a work in progress painting and a palette set up, ready to start

These love these two bits of advice Karen had to share...

"KISS- It’s an acronym for “Keep It Simple, Stupid”, used by one of my first teachers, Kelli Folsom. Except she’s much nicer so she uses “keep it simple, sweetie”. It’s also a rule of thumb that has been used in design work as well. It reminds me that the beauty isn’t in the details, my paintings are meant to be more of a poem than an essay and too much detail will take away from that."

"Another is a “whole lot of nothing and a little bit of something”, often said by David Leffel, another artist I admire who still teaches today. Which reminds me that too much detail everywhere will take away from the most important ones in a painting and will ultimately dull what you are trying to say."

Another side of Karen's studio space

Karen, like many artists, enjoys listening to music while making her works...

"[I always listen to music] for the block in and probably the first half of the painting. It’s important to me that this part is loose, fun and expressive. I like Lumineers, Iron & Wine, Damien Rice and Nathaniel Rateliff.

For the final stages of my work I prefer no music as every stroke has a lot of thought going in and I find it easier to concentrate."

Karen's studio-mate Kami

Having a friend join in the creative fun of the studio is always a treat!
Pictured above is Kami, one Karen's three kitties (Kiko and Rosie, not picuted) often joins Karen in the studio.

"My Studio cat Kami. She has a twin sister, Kiko and a sister from another mister, Rosie. But she hangs out in the studio the most."

Sunday Studio Days - Gordon MacDonald & Dusan Postolovic

Welcome back to another Sunday Studio Days blog!

This week we will be feauturing oil painter Gordon MacDonald and coloured pencil artist Dusan Postolovic!

GORDON MACDONALD

Gordon is known for his incredible sky paintings as well as his old world style of painting on metal surfaces like copper and aluminum. We jokingly call Gordon our "mascot" artist since he has been with the gallery for over 20 years!

Gordon's studio space

We've seen thousands of paintings come out of Gordon's studio, no two paintings exactly the same! With such a prolific amount of work we asked Gordon how does he make the decision what to paint?

a collection of supplies Gordon keeps on hand

"There are several ways. I can source the places around the provinces that I love (east of Quebec). I can just paint from my imagination and see what happens. I can also combine both. Sometimes , I just like a specific colour of paint and build a painting around it. These will all put me in my favorite position, to start adding and editing until the paintings take on something better than what I conceived of in the beginning. Sometimes, they are even unrecognizable in the best way. That is the most satisfying."

A closer look at a work in progress from Gordon and his palette.

We asked Gordon what was the best advice he had ever received...

"In 1984, a teacher named Andrew Bodor said, " Every day you will have 5 reasons not to paint. They aren't bullshit,  but legitimate reasons such as grocery shopping, appointments, other work.... At the end of the day, you won't have painted. A day can turn into years and you won't paint. You either paint or you don't." It is stark but when I jumped in with both feet in my 30s , painting had to be the first with my life built around it.  As they say in those 12 step groups, "Half measures availed us nothing." This made me paint 1500 paintings."

This is excellent advice for anyone looking for a push to achieve their goals!

Todd taking a nice nap, sprawled out in the middle of Gordon's studio

Spending hours in the studio can be lonely work, thankfully not for Gordon! Gordon has found himself a lovely studio-mate out of a neighbourhood cat! We asked Gordon to share with us a little about his studio companion.

"... a neighbour cat comes over and sleeps in his cat bed under my drawing table. His name is Todd and he's a 23lb orange cat. He will sit by me and wait until I put my brushes down and pat him/chin rubs/noggin squishumz. Then he either goes back to bed or out to lay in the sun, or goes home."

How does Gordon get any work done with this cutie hanging around?!

DUSAN POSTOLOVIC

Dusan is a fantastic coloured pencil artist! His drawing style is so realistic most folks think they're looking at a photograph!

A shot of Dusan's studio space

We asked Dusan what a typical day in his studio looks like...

"The only constant for any studio day for me is a huge cup of coffee! Much of my artistic process is coming up with cohesive ideas and themes for series of works (as I tend to really like working in series rather than stand alone pieces). So I spend a lot of time planning, writing things out, doing small thumbnail sketches, coming up with ideas on what I want to draw next, then acquiring said thing if its possible, and taking my own reference images. The final piece is often the last part of the creative process!"

Dusan's sketchbook full of sketches and working ideas

"I am inspired by my own personal history and past, and how popular culture, consumer culture, and every day things play a role in it."

Says Dusan on how he builds his idea for shows...

Dusan's sketchbook full of art plans

"My mind never stops when it comes to ideas. I write out what I think may be an interesting body of work, do some preliminary work on it, maybe some sketches, and then let the idea sit in a sketchbook for up to a year (or more). If after that year I am still super excited or inspired by the idea or body of work, I know its a good one and start making it happen."

Some finished coloured pencil drawings by Dusan!

We asked Dusan what has been his favourite and most proud moments in his art career thus far...

"My most recent show was probably one of my favorite, as it was the first time our son was old enough to understand what he was looking at (many pieces were drawings of his toys) and comment on/get excited about seeing his toys he loved so much as works of art. In terms of proudest moments... probably the very first time I had a piece hang in a real gallery all the way back in 2011."

Look at all those coloured pencils!

We asked Dusan the best piece of advice he ever received...

"Don't wait to be "in the mood/inspired" to create art, because some days the "mood/inspiration" may never come. Sometimes, creating art, putting yourself out there, putting shows together etc is a grind - and that's okay! Often starting the art/work creates the mood to keep going."

Interesting to see the similarities between the advice Gordon and Dusan had to share... Seems like it really boils down to staying committed and never giving up!

A very relaxed Dusan sitting at his drawing table.
