Today, in Halifax, we had a typical Fall day mixed with cool temperatures, warm temperatures, rain, sunlight, drizzle, wind, clear skies..and everything in between. If you have ever visited Nova Scotia, you know this is just part of the course here it seems no matter what the season.
If you live here, you tend to accept it and perhaps even embrace it. It brings with it an ever-changing sky to admire, photograph and sometimes paint. The light here is exceptional as well, and these latest paintings by emerging artist Mary Garoutte is a very good example of the pure beauty we have all around us. We hope you enjoy these as much as well do!
Mary's show just opened on Friday, and already many of the works have sold, but these three are some of the favourites that are still available. ENJOY! You can see ALL of Mary's works from this new show by clicking on this LINK: http://www.flickr.com/photos/62710153@N03/sets/72157634703786381/

TONIGHT: Opening receptions for MARY GAROUTTE and NAOMI WALSH
Tuesday, September 17, 2013
WE ARE OPEN whilst INSTALLATION is in progress!
There's no sense in closing our doors during the shift from one show to another. I think (or at least I hope ) that you can appreciate the "behind the scenes" view of the gallery as we scurry around taking new works in preparation for our next exhibition.
Next up? MARY GAROUTTE. This is her second solo show with us, but to be honest, it's her first large scale feature. Mary has been working diligently on this body of work for a year now, and her hard work shows. We hope you'll join us THIS FRIDAY from 7-9 pm for the very exciting unveiling of Mary Garoutte's show titled "Postcards from Home". If you're not able to make it in for the opening reception, make sure you swing by the gallery sometime earlier this week - you may find us in a state of disorder, but the paintings will be here shining through.
"Postcards From Home" new work by Mary Garoutte opens Friday, September 20th at 7pm.
Also on feature will be a new collection of pottery by Naomi Walsh!! Stay tuned for more details on this talented emerging potter.

Oh, hello there JOHN CLEESE.
His arrival allows us to finally unveil an art piece which we've kept behind the desk for a few months now in anticipation of his appearance... BEHOLD, a beautifully crafted homage to his era with faulty towers. Isn't it STUNNING?! See how she's carefully adjusted the colouring of his face above the tie to suggest suffocation?!? So lovely. And the way his feet dangle sweetly, with a slight swing to the right? Beautiful.
Hanging John Cleese is needle felted by the very talented Angela Penton, who is also responsible for the giant squid we had in our window for some time, and of course, the enormous Jelly Fish we have suspended in our staircase. If you're in town to see the John's performance (you lucky ducks you!!) swing by the gallery, and see the hanging version, too!

Welcome! Welcome! Peter Rafuse!
If you've walked passed our front window in the past few hours, you may have spotted a few new additions to our family of folk animals. We're very happy to have a goat, a few hairy pigs, a rooster, some spotted pigs and a skunk on proud display! These happy wooden carvings are the work of an incredible local folk artist, Peter Rafuse - and we couldn't be more excited about taking on his pieces. We think you'll all adore them (oh, you do! The rooster just sold!!) and perhaps you'll want stay tuned for information on an upcoming exhibition featuring Peter Rafuse, and the wonderful Barry Colpitts!?! Now THAT's something to look forward to!!

HEY STUDENTS!!! (or anyone for that matter..) How are those walls looking? Hmm?
I'm sure you've all found your basics for apartment living by now...Mattress? check. "Homework" table? check. Sturdy sofa with moderately clean cushions? Cheeeck. Fish and Bowl? Double check. Original artwork by local artists? ..... *crickets*
To be fair, that's not always true ;) We've had tons of you young folks visiting us at the gallery on a regular basis, and we're so delighted to see your enthusiasm for original artwork. And to make it even easier to participate in collecting great, life long treasures, we have a 15% off SALE ON ALL PRINTS AND JEWELLERY!! And to be clear, we're not talking about posters here. These are all hand made forms of print making, created by a fantastic collection of local artists. The Jewellery is incredible too. Come see!!
(Sale applies to all prints and jewellery. Sale ends on September 14th)

GREETINGS (through cards)
In the run of a day, we often receive new artwork that we like to highlight on this here blog, but let me remind you of the constants that don't often get featured online:
We have an absolutely superb collection of greeting cards by the Regional Assembly of Text, and have one for every occasion imaginable (well...almost anyhow.) They're beautifully designed, creative and FUN. They're definitely the cards that will stand out amongst others at your next fancy gathering...
