Belle DeMont - When the Veil is at it's Thinnest

Belle DeMont was one of our featured artists for NOCTURNE this year,

our annual citywide evening art event.

Belle DeMont, When The Veil is at it's Thinnest, Oil on Canvas, 8"x10"

Belle's show "When the Veil is at it's Thinnest" boasts over 20 paintings featuring her take on relatable and recognizable Nova Scotian imagery.

Belle DeMont, Nova Scotia Fairy Tale, Oil on Canvas, 24"x24"

Belle's concept for this body of work derived from a love of literature, something in her blood as the daughter of a well known local journalist, John DeMont. Belle is however, a writer in her own right and has authored the children's book "I Love My Purse" and illustrated the children's book "The Little Tree by the Sea".

A love for literature and story telling is strongly evident in her visual art as each painting feels like a glimpse into a greater fantasy story Belle is telling.

Belle DeMont, A Clean Well-lit place, Oil on Canvas, 24"x24"

While the work we usually see from Belle carries a light hearted, fantastical and dreamlike appearance, this collection has turned to something darker and more serious while maintaining the whimsical dreamlike quality she is known for.

Belle DeMont, The Web Itself is a Miracle, Oil on Canvas, 11"x14"

Each piece from this grouping is titled after lines from different books and writers. Including references to the Odyssey, Charlotte's Web and texts from Belle's father's work and even Belle herself

Belle DeMont, I Had the Feeling That the House Was Watching Me, Every Window an Eye, Oil on Canvas, 8"x10"

Belle took a unique approach to this body of work and included a virtual reality component for the live viewers. Folks in the gallery can download the AR app, ARloopa, where the viewer is able to scan the paintings with their phone camera and see the title of each artwork appear across the face of the painting.

Belle DeMont, The Sea Witch, Oil on Canvas, 48"x60"

Not only does this reiterate the importance of literature to Belle but emphasizes the drama her work imposes with their deep, moody, and mythical appearance.

Belle DeMont, It seemed the fog had a life of its own — shifting, crawling, swallowing things whole and giving them back altered, Oil on Canvas, 30"x40"
