Today's  HIGH NOON featured work  is by Nick Brunt. This work was painted waaaaaay back in  2009...just at the beginning of the zombie craze in Halifax! This would make the perfect addition to any home, where a bit of whimsy and playful horror is called for- perhaps a dining room? The work is called, "Brains", acrylic and ink on board,  measures 18" x 24".   If you love art, Nick Brunt (who was voted BEST ARTIST of Halifax many times in The Coast's Survey) and want to be prepared for the upcoming return to the tv series The Walking Dead....this is the piece for you!  It also has a  surprise on the back of the piece....you'll have to come and see it!

CREATIVE EDITIONS January Prints are Ready for Pick-UP!

ATTENTION: Creative Editions art subscribers: YOUR PRINTS HAVE ARRIVED for January!

As some of you may know, Argyle Fine Art launched an art subscription service in August 2014. Since that time, our subscribers have been increasing, so much so, that we had to add a second collector group. That means that if you subscribed early on, you are part of the Collector Group A or if later, Collector Group B. This also means there are very different works of art released in both groups, and very limited editions of only 50!

In fact, some members of the first group, have subscribed to the second group since we began it...and there are some spaces remaining in case you were interested in extending your subscription or beginning one!

Today's  HIGH NOON featured work  is by Mark Brennan. This work was painted in 2009 and is a true beauty! It's framed and matted, ready for hanging!  The work is called "Gully Lake; Winter"',acrylic on board.  The work itself measures 17" x 21, however the overall framed dimensions are 19" x 23". This is not only incredibly painted but would make a perfect addition to any home or office, and a great addition to anyone that collects Mark's work or Nova Scotia landscapes.

Today's  HIGH NOON featured work  is by Kim Vallis. This work has been with us for quite some time (perhaps 2008?) and is in relatively good condition. There is a slight imperfection (see close up image below), and the frame has a few scuffs, but nothing that really detracts from the piece and not noticeable at first glance as the work is mixed media and all about texture and the beauty in imperfection. The work is called "Morning Frost', it measures 24" x 24", mixed media.

Yesterday (Sunday, January 11th) we weren't able to upload our HIGH NOON at NOON images so today (Monday, January 12th) we've decided to highlight not one but THREE works by Vaughn Gray.

Today's  HIGH NOON featured works  are by Vaughn Gray, acrylic on canvas, 6" x 6", wide canvas stretcher (suitable for hanging as is or can stand freely on a bookcase or ledge) . These paintings are all very special!  Vaughn is self-taught and loves to pay close attention to detail. Growing up in Yarmouth County, much of his subject matter relates back to his homeland.There is a warmth and comfort that people get from viewing his work.  Each of these works are strong individually or as a grouping.  All three pieces pictured below are from 2008-2009.

Today's  HIGH NOON featured work is a work called "Robie Street Roof" by Gordon MacDonald, Oil on Linen stretched over board,  11" x 14",  framed in handcrafted wood frame (adds about 1/2 inch to the overall dimensions). This painting has sparked many a conversation; especially as it's a very different perspective on the city of Halifax. Certainly, many things have changed in our growing city since this painting was created in 2012.

Today's  HIGH NOON featured work is a work called "Beaver Brook", ink and acrylic on canvas, measuring 12" x 10" by artist Brian Porter. There are never enough words to describe how we feel about the works by Brian Porter. He is simply brilliant in everything he does! Known for his characters of clowns, Little Bo-Peep, hot rods, cowboys and snakes often paired with  hand- drawn typography that is rarely seen these days,  this piece is a bit quieter but no less thought provoking. This work was painted in 2005 and is the perfect piece for a new or seasoned collector to purchase.

Today's  HIGH NOON featured works are called  " Feline Faces 1 and Feline Faces 2"  by artist Bryanna Chapeskie.   You can purchase either of these works separately or together as a pair. Each work measures 12" x 12", acrylic on canvas and is ready to hang, painted on wide canvas. Bryanna is a brilliant  emerging artist who continues to delight us with her colourful, happy and fairy tale like imagery. These works are whimsically illustrative and modern looking- with a pop art sparkle.  Either one would be purrrrrrfect for any feline lover but also for a new babies room! Kids love art just as much as the rest of us- what a great way to start off a creative mind. ( which reminds us, do you have your Creative Editions Subscription yet?)

We'd like to introduce you to these works and hope that some of them find a home with you.


Today's  HIGH NOON featured work is called "Sunrise on Baddeck" by artist Jenny Johnson.   This work measures16" x 20", and is painted with oil on canvas. Although the subject matter may be Winter, the warmth and glow of the sky and landscape in this painting makes Winter almost bearable. This work was painted in 2011 and we are amazed that it hasn't found a home,  as it's had a lot of admirers over the years. We have a group of artists that love painting skies and clouds at our gallery, and Jenny is no exception! Even though the title of the painting speaks of Cape Breton, it surely could be almost anywhere in Atlantic Canada. This sky is alive!

NEW! Limited Pre-Shrunk GOLDEN Tickets Available!

For almost as long as Argyle Fine Art has been around, there has been "PRE-SHRUNK". This small and mighty show celebrates creating small works of art measuring just 4" x 5". This proves to be more challenging than most artists first expect it to be.  Some of our gallery artists have been participating for years now, and have figured out how to approach this project successfully. The only rule enforced is the size restriction and all the works are all priced at $175. All mediums are accepted- painting, ceramic, textile, assemblage and more.  (Artists: Submissions are still open and guidelines are located HERE.)

 The 2015 show will open on Friday, January 23rd at 7pm. Believe it or not, there is usually a line-up outside our doors to get a first glimpse at the little paintings. But the first people to see them are our Pre-Shrunk Voucher holders. Although our limited amount of vouchers sold out in November, we are happy to sell a spot in line to 10 others from now until the day before the show opens. The price is just the price of what a painting sells for ($175) but a special GOLDEN ticket will grant you entrance just after the voucher holders have made their selections and get you ahead of the rest of the crowd!

Because there are close to 300 works in this show each year,  there are many works that get overlooked but are just so beautiful. We have highlighted a few of them below,  from the 2014 Pre-Shrunk show that are still available and are offering these for just $95 until January 16th. The slightly late and obligatory "2014 in Review" blog posting but with lots of pictures!

WOW!

2015 is finally here.....and finally we've had  the chance to look back at all the great things that happened at Argyle Fine Art  in 2014 and WOW- if we do say so ourselves; it was a wonderful year!

We're back at it today, planning and scheming some wonderful events and shows for the 2015 season. CHECK BACK NEXT WEEK to find out more, see some sneak peeks on Pre-Shrunk works (show opens on January 23rd!) and of course, take advantage of our annual HIGH NOON at NOON special savings which will occur beginning on January 6th!

Until then, let's reminisce of 2014 with a few photo collages of just a few of the great shows and events we hosted in 2014!

January 2014 started off with a BANG of small paintings, all measuring just 4" x 5", in our annual show called Pre-Shrunk. We had close to 300 little works of art on the walls last year....Emerging artist Caitlin McGuire dropped by one Saturday last January and did some drawing on site- of the whole show. 

February is definitely a time to have fun with art as much as possible. We featured our Cat Person and Dog Person show in February as well as invited families to depict famous original works of art...in LEGO.  The results were amazing.

As the winter continued on (it was a looooooooooong Winter in 2014) the need to play became even more evident, so in March we hosted a series of shows celebrating just that. New works by Pamela McInnis of the puppet variety were a delight and the walls were filled with the likes of the carnival!

EASTER time is a fun time at the gallery!  We had a great selection of works up by many artists, including the hand-painted cushions by Tanya Owen, papermache eggs by Marie Jardine and of course, our annual Easter Egg Hunt for art lovers.

Late April and May brought flowers to the gallery, both in paint by Twila Robar-DeCoste and in real-life, with a display of ceramic works by NSCAD students brought to life with living plants and flowers by the Ikebana Shop. Then in May, we were proud to be part of the I LOVE LOCAL "Open City" event and were pleased to be hosting Nancy Rose and her very squirrel-ly  props and postcards.

Luke Naylor and David Lerue had shows! As did George Spencer!  William Rudolph dropped by with new works (that's him sporting a new pair of glasses made from bike parts) We even had lemonade on warmer days in June, provided by LEMON DOGS and of course, the folk art animals attended a good old fashioned June wedding.

July was a tough month for the gallery. We're not gonna lie...with Barrington Street dug up and cut off most of the month, we tried to make the best of it and featured a jewellery show during PRIDE WEEK...where we literally walked amoung the rubble and debris and made the best of it!  See those smiley people in front of a large dump truck parked outside our windows? That's artist Karolina Anna-Hajna and her models wearing her wearable ceramic art pieces.  But then....August came...and we had new works by Caitlin McGuire and Mary Garoutte and Gordon MacDonald, we met a new artist- Sarah Jones, installed an amazing art project off-site and even had some dogs drop by for portraits during the Downtown Halifax Business Commissions "Dog Days of Summer"

September and October just flew by!  They are traditionally the two busiest months at our gallery, and this year was no exception. We launched our new CREATIVE EDITIONS series mid-August, but word really got out in September, we were part of the Downtown Art Walk and of course, our favourite night of all...NOCTURNE. We also were involved with TIMERAISER Halifax and met some new artists along the way, like Christopher Hemsworth (known for his very popular Heritage Minutes posters) pictured here working on some watercolours.

 Artist Mark Brennan not only had a fabulous show at our gallery this  November, but he also treated us to a very memorable artist talk, complete with images and sounds from his artistic journey.

And FINALLY.....we made it to December!  A time of New Art, Tree Trimming, New works arriving almost daily from our amazing artists, and giving back to the community!  Phew!

And that brings us to current day...January 2nd, 2015....and our first show of the season is Pre-Shrunk!  

In 2015, the Pre-Shrunk show will open on Friday, January 23rd.
