Painting a Day Series: Number Nine is brought to you by Steven Rhude

Since there is much talk about the fate of our lighthouses in the Atlantic Provinces, we thought this painting was appropriate to post. It's actually from an entire series of paintings that artist Steven Rhude created two years ago, upon hearing of the governments proposed plans over the last number of years.

This painting is called "Moon and Light" and measures 36" x 48" and is $4000. Framed by the artist.

Painting A Day Series: Number Eight is by Gordon MacDonald

If you've ever visited the gallery, chances are at some point you've crossed paths with artist Gordon MacDonald. Gordon just had a mini show of Nocturnal Landscapes, which you can  enjoy at www.argylefineart.com . Now, he's getting ready for his show, opening in August. Expect some urban landscapes- we can hardly wait!

Today's painting is from a trip Gordon took to Newfoundland a few years ago. This painting is called November in Woody Point. It is painted on copper with oil, measures 8" x 10" and is $650. (framed in locally crafted frame)

This piece is even more luminous and dreamy in person. I've only been to Newfoundland once before, but this is the memory I have of the light there- all  purple and blue. Gordon is a master of light-every location has it's own unique feeling because of this too. 

Painting A Day Series: Number Seven is by Mary Ann Archibald

Ok. ok.....I know we've posted TWO Bunny paintings in a row here...but we love this new little piece so much, we just had to share. It's by artist Mary Ann Archibald, who will also be participating in our upcoming show NEXT Saturday, April 14th from 2-4pm, called PAPER THREADS. Make sure to drop by and meet Mary Ann in person then....

But in the meantime, enjoy this whimsical, fuzzy pink bunny...perhaps even give this bunny a new home with you or someone you know, for Easter. Art is better than chocolate after all;  paintings live forever, they are calorie free and guilt free.

Painting A Day Series:Number Six is by Marcel Piet-Hein Kerkhoff

Hippity Hoppity!

Artist Marcel Piet-Hein Kerkhoff just moved back to the Maritimes, so we hope to see more of his work in a few months, once he gets settled into a studio. We thought that since everyone is thinking about Easter, that this painting would be just the thing!  This work is very unique, in that it's painted on a piece of wood attached to the metal stand- and can be displayed just as it is. It's a painting..in a sculptural format. Also...there is another painting on the other side. But you'll have to come to the gallery to see what that is...

This piece is called simply " Bunny" and is 12.5" x 18", oil on board, and sells for $825

ATTENTION ALL ARTISTS: PAPER THREADS SUBMISSIONS

Remember way back when (errr, a few weeks ago) when we released the paper threads call for submissions? Well, I neglected to realize that the deadline for entries was 

scheduled for good Friday, when we are in fact CLOSED  :O  

SO... we are revising that deadline, 

and have changed it to April 11th! 

So spread the word to anyone you know who is submitting work, we'd hate to

 hear that someone came down on Friday, only to be stuck outside in the 

cold, with their pretty paper dolls...

 If you have no idea what the Paper Threads exhibition is about, here's the rundown:
  
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS:
In correlation with the Titanic’s 100^th anniversary,  Argyle Fine Art will be launching its latest exhibition, titled  “PAPER THREADS” This collection of locally crafted paper dolls will depict fashions from the early 1900’s and more. Submissions are welcome from artists of all backgrounds!! If you’re in the fine arts, fine crafts, animation, graphic, or fashion design… we want to see your interpretation of this project! Please read our submission guidelines, and start creating!

                       

Submission guidelines:

- Artists may submit any number of paper dolls/ outfits

-  Works must be original, hand crafted, and created using ARCHIVAL paper.

- Dolls can be rendered in any medium: paint, ink, watercolour, graphite, collage, etc…

- Dolls can be created in any size (within reason, and consideration for our display space)

- Works should somehow reflect the period/fashion of the Titanic. Our focus here is really on    

   fashion/clothing ... meaning, a full figure (body) is not necessarily required.

- We ask that you cut out your paper doll before submitting, don’t forget to include some tabs :)   

- DO NOT frame, mount or put hanging devices on the backs of your works. We want to be able to         

artfully       

   display these pieces in Vintage trunks.

- Please make sure your works are signed (either on the front or the back)

- DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS APRIL 11TH

To submit your creation/s, simply send jpegs of your completed work/s to gallery@argylefa.com

If submitting via photo is not possible, then drop by the gallery between 10am-5:30, Tuesday through Saturday with your completed piece/s. (CLOSED SUNDAYS AND MONDAYS) All submissions will be reviewed by our Jury. Artists will be sent a notice on their application shortly after the submission deadline on April 6^th.

Pricing will be determined by the artist, with assistance from the gallery.

Show opens Saturday, April 14^th at 2pm.

Painting A Day Series: Number Five is brought to you by Nick Brunt...FOXY!

Spring has almost really sprung now...really, and Nick Brunt recently brought us a few new works, with many new ones on their way soon, for part of of his solo show in June. So save your pennies....um...yes, we're still happy to accept pennies....

This latest work is called "The Fox" and it measures 16" x 20", and sells for $375.

 Nick is becoming an artist to watch, not only on the local scene but nationally too. A piece by Nick will be featured in an upcoming issue of Applied Arts Magazine. AND.....Nick will also be collaborating with another amazing gallery artist, Ed Beals, for our NOCTURNE feature inside the gallery on October 13th....stay tuned for updates on this progress soon.

Painting A Day Series: Number Four is by Kathy Richards

To anyone from the Halifax area, or those of you that love wonderful vintage clothing....you may recognize the place depicted in this small and delightful painting by Kathy Richards-who loves painting the city.  Springtime is a great time to walk along Spring Garden Road and then turn onto Queen Street, where you can see this painting in "real life"..not to mention say hello to our friends at Encore Clothing, Elsies and  the Clotheshorse (and soon another new store-front for Put Me On coming soon to the old Back Pages Bookstore.)  I highly recommend checking these places out-you can find quite the gems there.

This little painting captures the special quality of Halifax, with it's interesting shops inside brightly painted historic houses. Come see this little painting in person at Argyle Fine Art.

Painting A Day Series: Shelley Mitchell's Night Hawks

Welcome to the third painting, in our "Painting A Day Series". From here on in, we hope to post the Painting of the Day each day by 11:30am...just in time for you to take a look online, and if in the area, to drop by Argyle Fine Art and see the featured painting in person.

Today's feature is called Halifax Nighthawks by Shelley Mitchell. It's probably one of the most well-loved and talked-about paintings at the gallery that  needs a great home. Although, we admit...we'll miss it when it's gone. Do you know where this painting depicts (hint- Halifax scene)?

Shelley was inspired by Edward Hopper's work and that iconic painting Hopper's Nighthawks. (see below)  Like this painting, Shelley is capturing a mood and a feeling of a city and what it feels like to live in it,and to view it at night. Like Hopper's painting, the  building  in Shelley's painting is  iconic as well- and is now under development. We look forward to how this development progresses, as it is close to where our old gallery site was for many years. Many nights we walked past this very scene-and it felt like we were in this painting. 

Sunday's Painting A Day Series: Trevor Van Den Eijnden

Hello and Welcome to the second painting from our "Painting A Day Series" here at Argyle Fine Art. Today, we'd like to share this amazing work by Trevor Van Den Eijnden, which was part of a larger series a few years back. 

This work is called "Burning Lands: TV". It is a combination of paint, photo transfer and metal leaf on canvas. It measures 16" x 16" and is $650.

For some reason this work still remains!  It's one of our favourite and doesn't get seen as much at the gallery. Many people have come to know Trevor for his luminescent mixed media works of crows.


Just imagine...most of us will live to see the day when the TV will be a thing of the past. This painting has a very special, nostalgic feeling. In person, this piece glows and is a strong work all on it's own. It would be perfect for someone who loves vintage inspired pieces or a business who works with technology.

Trevor was born in Pictou County- it seems lately there are so many  talented artists coming from that part of the province of Nova Scotia. Although Trevor now lives in British Columbia, he makes a trip to home and the gallery each summer. We are planning on having a new body of work by Trevor in June. Stay tuned for more information on that soon!

HELLO AND WELCOME TO OUR PAINTING A DAY SERIES! Our first featured work is by Dennis Reid

Hello everyone and Happy Saturday to you all!  Today seems like an unlikely day to start a series as such, but there's no day like the present I suppose.

After chatting with a friend on a warm summer-like day the other day (remember THAT day!), it dawned on me that we need to do more on our blog to get you to follow us along and share our posts with others....So if you like what you see in this series of posts about some wonderful works by our amazing artists, please re-post, Pinterest it, Twitter it..basically share the great art that's all around us.

Ok...so enough chatter...on with the painting of the day!

Today's painting is a NEW one to us...as of yesterday. It comes to us from an artist from New Brunswick, Dennis Reid.  As soon as these arrived, there was suddenly a lot more people stopping in their tracks outside our gallery window...and no wonder. Dennis brought us a grouping of new works, but I thought this one would be wonderful to share with you all, as it speaks SPRING! As one viewer said, you can " smell the earth and hear the water and feel the air in this one".

This work is called "Overflow"  It measures  32" x 34"

Artist Mark Brennan in the News today....

Good afternoon everyone!  We're delighted to find a great article in the METRO News today about Mark Brennan's latest body of work at the gallery. Join us TONIGHT for the SIGHTS and SOUNDS of artist Mark Brennan

We're delighted to be showcasing not only the painted works of Mark Brennan, but also the soundscapes he has collected while painting on location to many of the areas depicted in the paintings you'll see at the show.

As I write this, he is telling some amazing stories to a local reporter- he has such a sincere passion for what he does. I could listen to him for hours talking about these works, and we hope that you too, will drop by the gallery this evening, Friday, March 23rd beginning at 7pm, to meet Mark and hear him talk a bit too.  Here is a picture of Mark collecting some sounds in February of this year.

We will be joined by Yellow Tail Wines this evening as well, for a special wine tasting in hounour of this new show and our caterer, Certainly Cinnamon, has assured us they have created some special "thematic" food for the evening.Start your Friday evening with us, or be sure to drop by tomorrow and experience the sights and sounds of Mark Brennan.
